VIA Design 2014

The Maison&Objet fair, Hall 1 - Stand G2
From 24 to 28 January 2014

VIA DESIGN 2014 will be promoting the latest draft of Creation assistance projects at the Maison&Objet fair.
In 300 square metres, the public will discover seventeen new prototypes financed by VIA - tables, sofas, armchairs, consoles, lighting, touch pads, etc. – and imagined by the rising generation of French design. An annual event in the design world, the VIA Creation assistance prototypes show is unquestionably one of the best showcases for innovative design.

Comprised of one Carte Blanche, one Furnishing programme, six Project assistance grants and one Partnership project, VIA DESIGN 2014 brings together an array of prototypes that integrate new user protocols and bring a wealth of innovations in materials, experimental techniques, research into new industrial processes and eco-design initiatives.

Carte Blanche by eliumstudio : En archipel, for an evolving school

Working from the realization that digital applications are radically changing human activities, especially as regards relations to time and space, the eliumstudio team has set out to map new contours for the schools of tomorrow. The result reflects a paradigm shift: it is a working hypothesis scaled to a junior high school that upends all the codes of traditional teaching. Accompanying the generalized use of digital devices, teaching and learning in static mode give way to training methods that favour the body in movement and aim at achieving a better anchoring of knowledge and skills. Enhanced classroom layout and fit-out furniture with specific characteristics update user protocols. As well, the designers have developed a new generation digital tablet and its dedicated interface to blend new functions, behaviour patterns and body movements with the opportunities opened up by the infotech revolution. While the proposal draws inspiration from the discontinuous space of an archipelago, it has an integrated global capability. This is exemplified by the touch pad, the hexagonal form of which multiplies points of contact and links. The mobile device has been re-thought as a form and an interface to fit the hand, sit on a table top or hang on a wall, singly or connected with tablets used by other pupils, enabling continual movement and redeployment. As for class room space, it is laid out in different poles adapted to the nature of teaching and activities that take place there, with modular and nomad furniture (tables, cushions, culbuto-stools) to enable configurations of all kinds and favour freedom of movement. Under the guidance of the teacher, kids move from one pole to another, exchange information, conduct research, create, discuss things, or find a quiet place to study on their own.

To accompany the digital tablet and extend its capabilities as an interface, eliumstudio have also defined a platform dedicated to digitally enabled teaching, which puts different types of content face to face. Taken together, all these elements - tablet, enhanced fit-out/ space, platform – form a vehicle that functions in dynamic mode, encouraging inter-disciplinary exchange, team work, creativity and independent thinking – all this with the added advantage of personalized follow-up adapted to the learning curve of each pupil. In this way, the classroom becomes a gateway to global knowledge, to be browsed in both real and virtual space.

Furnishing Programme : Insulaire by numéro 111

Sophie Françon, Jennifer Julien and Grégory Peyrache of the numéro 111 design office are the creators of the second VIA Furnishing programme, entitled Insulaire. Numéro 111 see the living room as an island, a ‘space inside space’ where furniture plays a structuring role and creates varied experiences of comfort and use. The more traditional approach focuses on the sofa; the more laid-back take is linked to floor-level living, where the central element - a rug - is accompanied by easy-grip cushions that can be positioned as needed to form headrest, back-rest or seat. Other pieces interact with both space-levels: tables with an upper plateau that moves to serve at low or divan level, a lamp that reconfigures to serve as reading light, up-washer or standing lamp. There is also a screen that defines territory and doubles as a storage unit, the open-work parts of which serve to hang a mirror or digital devices. As for the material that pulls this set together, numéro 111 chose rattan for its solidity, flexibility and light weight, associating it to textiles whose soft colours create an impression of comfort conducive to rest.

The six Creation Assistance Grants and the Partnership Project

Needless to say, the body considered as the active principle par excellence informs the seating projects developed under the VIA Creation assistance programme 2014. Max by Bernard Moïse is a relaxing chair that offers - by means of a simple tilt over its chrome steel base - either a sitting or a laid-back position. There is no mechanical device to speak of and yet the seat guarantees optimal comfort what with a full-support shell that takes the weight of head, arms, torso and legs. A similar user protocol is present in the Partnership project developed by four students from the École Boulle working with the Majencia firm. Their Grand Angle office arm chair shifts easily from active working posture at 90 degrees to relaxed posture at 120 degrees. The tilt back and forth does not rely on a mechanism but on a simple shift of body weight.

Other original proposals for seating include Stacked by Laurent Greslin, a bridge arm chair assembled in three parts: a shell for seat and back, pierced by two side slits into which two wooden uprights are inserted to form base and arm rests. Alternately, the Feuilleté arm chair by Lili Gayman and Julie Arrivé offers a seat designed as four layers of soft felt laid over a rigid frame, with reserved spaces to hold book, magazine, phone, touch pad or whatever.

User comfort is also to be found in the sophisticated functions of the Aérobie detector-lamp by Pierre Charrié, which besides providing light sets up a discreet sound signal when the surrounding level of CO2 gets too high. As for the Oo suspension light by Julien Groboz, its light source modulates and re-directs according to the user’s whims by means of hoop ring and cables, which tilt a crown of leds. In a different register Grégoire de Lafforest proposes the Balka console, a stand-in/hold-all piece that puts out of sight, out of mind all those odds and ends we can’t bring ourselves to chuck out.

A state-of-the-art update, VIA Design 2014 demonstrates once again how the Creation assistance programme serves both the main assignment of VIA and the expectations of the general public by revealing controlled responses to changes in technology and modulating the impact these evolutions have on habitat.
