VIA Design 2013

In three stops – the Maison&Objet salon (Paris, January 2013), the VIA Gallery (Paris, February- March 2013) and the Milan fair (April 2013) –, the exhibition VIA Design 2013 will present to both professionals and the general public our Creation assistance projects for 2013. In 300 m² of show-space, visitors will discover prototypes financed by VIA and designed by the rising generation of French designers. The show will also feature work by a guest designer from another country. An annual event, the VIA Creation assistance prototypes exhibition is without doubt one of the best showcases for seeing the design of tomorrow now.
Exhibits will include one Carte Blanche award 2012-2013, four Project assistance grants, one Partnership project and one Guest designer from abroad (a new VIA initiative). The prototypes on show at VIA Design 2013 propose many innovations in terms of materials, experimental techniques, research into new industrial processes, and approaches to eco-design and production.

Carte Blanche award: Habitat imprimé by François Brument in collaboration with Sonia Laugier.

"Habitat imprimé" (Printed habitat) by François Brument explores digital applications and speculates on the possibility of developing an all-in process for design and fabrication. Brument, whose design research has been supported by VIA since 2007, has extended his field of investigation to construction. His formulation cuts across the traditional rules that separate structure and interior layout, non-structural walls and fit-out, merging them by using the most progressive technologies of 3D printing. Parametric data governing variable widths of partitions, reserves for furnishings and technical fit-out are given material form by means of injected overlays (plastic, sand or concrete) to create customized layouts that can be modulated in the course of production. The piece on display is a real-size module – bedroom, shower recess, dressing space – totalling 15 m2.
To realize his Carte Blanche project, François Brument enlisted the savoir-faire of the Voxeljet firm. When the designer met the makers in May 2011, he was immediately impressed by the potential of a single 3D printer able to produce large format pieces (4 m [l] x 2 m [w] x 1 m [h]), and by the possibility of developing this revolutionary concept for products linked to habitat. A world first.

4 Project assistance grants

The Project assistance prototypes for 2013 reveal several strong trends. To begin with, there is the hybrid creation "Wide" by Vincent Tordjman, which is a cabinet piece with built-in wireless amplifier/speakers and lighting. Developed with an acoustics engineer, the wall-mounted structure, which can also be used to install a home cinema, has integrated electronic systems that ensure top quality hi-fi sound. As for "Plume" by Bold Design (William Boujon & Julien Benayoun), it is a light fitting that embodies research using feather weight materials (aluminium, Tyvek®, Sparkle Drop Paper) assembled by means of a folding technique that ensures rigidity and enables integration of leds to diffuse light by both reflection and transparency. Traditional materials used in sophisticated ways characterize "Frondesco" by Statue (Louise de Saint-Angel & Romain Guillet), a wall-mounted textile canopy that works like a folding drape to enable the creation of a private sub-space within a room. Each side of the canopy is made of two thicknesses of woven cotton, which confer qualities that are not only decorative but also sound insulating. Last but not least, "Vola" by Grégoire de Lafforest, is a multi-functional wall-mounted piece that comprises an evolving, modular support for hanging shelves, boards, mirrors, cabinets… depending on the user’s needs, which does not take up floor space and remains mobile.
All VIA Project assistance prototypes carry an environmental impact data display – a new regulation that makes it compulsory for producers and distributors to provide significant information regarding the life cycle of their products and packaging, including traceable origin and a guarantee as to equitable conditions of manufacture.

‘Gold of Bengal’ Partnership project - the Toul stool

Replace timber and fibreglass by a composite material made of jute fibre and polyester resin – this is the challenge initiated by the "Toul" stool made under the ‘Gold of Bengal’ project by Joran Briand and Corentin de Chatelperron, the founder of the Gold of Bengal programme (Watever association1). In 2011 the association set up a research laboratory in Bangladesh to develop a new application of this ‘golden fibre’ for furniture and habitat. With its dynamic shape, the stool is the first design creation to use jute fibre mat and resin. Fabrication is simple: the mat is cut and fitted into a mould which is then filled with liquid polyester resin. Once hardened, the piece is removed, trimmed and buffed to appear as a light weight stackable stool. Following their first tests, Joran Briand asked producer Frédéric Morand - founder of Saintluc - to take part in the project. Rich with expertise gained using flax fibre, Saintluc made a commitment to develop and manufacture the commercial version of the Toul stool presented in this exhibition.

Guest designer from abroad – a new initiative for 2013

Pursuing its role as a talent scout, VIA decided to include a young designer from another country in this year’s promotion. With the help of members of Cerma2, pioneers in the distribution of contemporary furniture in France, the Japanese designer Shoji Katsume (Studio Niji) was chosen to present his Lactea lamp, going on the same criteria retained for Project assistance grants.
The new initiative acknowledges the universal dimension of culture and creation. This was what the exhibition ‘Génération Design’, mounted by VIA, which ran at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris last September, aimed at doing.
