VIA Design 2011

Thirteen VIA Creation Assistance projects by young French design talents.

The VIA Design exhibition which ran from 8 to 26 June at the VIA gallery in Paris presented our Creation Assistance projects for 2011.
The display filled 300 m² and enabled the public to examine at close quarters the thirteen prototypes financed by VIA this year. Works included furniture, lighting, objects and installations – all of them designed by the rising generation in French design. An event in the world of creation, the VIA Creation Assistance projects show is one of the major showcases for the design of tomorrow.

Grouping one Carte Blanche award, eleven Project Assistance grants and one Partnership project, the thirteen prototypes on show at VIA Design 2011 proposed innovations in terms of materials, eco-design, experimental techniques, and research into new industrial processes.

Talk on the VIA Carte Blanche 2011

{OBJET} TROU NOIR – PUTTING IT IN WORDS

VIA chaired a talk between philosopher Pierre-Damien Huyghe and designers Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard, focused on their VIA Carte Blanche project 2011.

Any commitment to a creation process entails first of all a resolution in language. This is what makes the open discussion between Pierre-Damien Huyghe, Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard, around the {objet} trou noir* project, exemplary. The philosopher weighed up the words used by the designers, searching their roots and ramifications, sometimes suggesting clearer terms, revealing depths of meaning and the sovereign importance of concepts. As for the designers, their heightened awareness of the power of words strengthened their objectivity in the face of stereotypes, so much so that they were able to move boldly into new territories opening up like sight lines. Thus escaping the fatal attraction otherwise linked to ‘black holes’.
A moment of pure grace and shared pleasure, the exchange took place in private; but we wanted to give it a public presence to accompany our VIA Creation Assistance projects 2011 exhibition.
