MOBIDécouverte saison 3 - Les Enfants Designers

Backed by the IFA (French furniture industries), the third MOBIDécouverte - Les Enfants Designers exhibition, which opened at the VIA gallery in Paris on 4 September, will run to 14 November 2010. On show are 30 prototype pieces imagined by young school kids: some truly amazing works that illustrate the unbounded ingenuity of children. Working under the eye of their teachers and monitored by professional furniture designers, throughout the school year, these ‘up and coming creators’ experienced the reality of project development from outline sketch to working model, and from computerized resolution to prototype construction. The best creations - those selected - were made by industrialists, craftsmen and training centres.

Among the creations on show visitors will discover Pour les petits et pour les grands, a bench seat that enables children and adults to sit down together with their eyes at the same level, and the 1, 2, 3, Fauteuil !, an armchair that proposes an innovative solution for adjusting seat height. Other finds include the BTT, an all-purpose desk for class room and home, or fun moving chairs such as Rocking School or the Canapé à bascule. There is also the Pour les Abeilles shelving system, in which each object is ascribed a cell-like niche adapted to its dimensions. As for La Preuve par 3, it is a chair with built-in playground, for sitting or climbing, depending on which way it is set down. Transformation is also a feature of Chaise-Tiroirs and Pour se Souvenir, which offer secret storage space, an avatar of the filing cabinet for kids.

All of these projects grew out of collective initiatives in teaching contexts. The third edition brought together over 1000 primary school children – some 40 pilot classes from all over France, which took part in the project. Working from the educational and creative methods set into place, school kids were able to express their aspirations and their visions concerning everyday objects. Among these are the need for easy access to functions, the desire to protect, to be together, to hide and to have fun… Seventeen professional furniture designers in collaboration with seventeen firms, whether industries or artisans, along with training centres, including secondary and technical schools such as the AFPIA, provided the expertise. Children thus discovered the reality of working life, the diversity of trade skills, fabrication processes, and so on. They were also initiated to notions of sustainable development, advanced technologies and innovative materials, in particular thanks to the role of VIA and the FCBA technological institute.
