VIA@Milan 2009

For the eighth year running VIA (Valorization of Innovation in Furnishing) will be in Milan offsite, at the Magna Pars Gallery (Zona Tortona), exhibiting prototypes financed by its annual Creation Assistance programme:

1. VIA Carte Blanche to architect/ designer Philippe Rahm : a climate-related performance installation to “naturalize” indoor space.

2. Thirteen VIA Creation Assistance Grants to reveal fifteen young designers.

3. A new renewable material developed by designer François Azambourg and DCS.

2009 VIA Creation Assistance Grants

The Carte Blanche grant : Philippe Rahm / " Terroirs déterritorialisés "
The 2009 VIA Carte Blanche award developed by architect and designer Philippe Rahm aims at stimulating thought on our living environment. Rahm tackles the question of relations between indoor and outdoor, artificial and natural milieus, imagining that the climate and topography of the surrounding environment should also prevail inside the house. Using wind, temperature, light and the humidity level of the air, “Terroirs déterritorialisés” is a climate-related performance installation the main elements of which are: dual-flow air renewal, radiator heating and lighting. Projected in a working hypothesis, these items conspire to “naturalize” indoor living space in phase with the external environment – but without the negative effects of atmospheric pollution and global warming.
Carte Blanche grant : Every year VIA awards a research grant to one or several designers whose originality and maturity of creative approach are outstanding for the period. A committee composed of well-known figures from industry, distribution, creation, education and the press selects the designer, and the grant enables him/her to develop a personal project of a prospective character. Carte Blanche projects aim at developing products focused on everyday activities that reflect the life-styles of contemporary people. Beneficiaries receive support from VIA throughout the project elaboration process, during which a constant eye is kept on market demands and technical feasibility. Carte Blanche assignments also give manufacturers, producers and distributors a chance to discover and meet the talented people who are designing the products of tomorrow.

13 Project Assistance grants
• Air Chair chair, design Samuel Accoceberry
• L’arbre à table table, design Blackmamouth (Mathieu Galard, Cédric Habert and Frédéric Poisson)
• Lampe grimpante light fixture, design Joran Briand
• Unit bookshelves, design Itamar Burstein
• Lamellé-décollé chair, design Salomé de Fontainieu and Godefroy de Virieu
• Dancing chair rocking chair, design Constance Guisset
• Tri 3* dustbin, design Constance Guisset, with Grégory Cid
• Sesta low chair, design Bruno Houssin

• Universal Base table base, design Philippe Nigro, edited by Ligne Roset
• Mesh table, design Antoine Phelouzat
• Corniche light fixture, design Renaud Thiry
• Pelican night stand, design Marc Venot
Project Assistance grant: In its role as a discoverer of young talent, VIA analyses all the projects that are spontaneously submitted by designers every year. A committee composed of well-known figures from industry, distribution, creation, education and the press reviews these projects and selects those that appear to be the most relevant and innovative in terms of design, technique, aesthetics and environmental.
Financing for the construction of prototypes is then allotted. This enables direct dialogue between the designer and the manufacturer or producer, with an eye to finding a market opening. VIA Project Assistance thus provides a valuable means of expression for all young design school graduates. Apart from the promotion aspect, designers also benefit by the fact that VIA puts them in direct contact with manufacturers. At the same time, VIA Project Assistance grants give manufacturers, producers and distributors the chance to discover and meet the talented people who are designing the products of tomorrow.

Partnership Project
A new renewable material developed by designer François Azambourg and the company DCS (Design Composites Solutions). This innovation offers an alternative to wood panelling, a fundamental component in industrial furniture production.
Partnership Project : Project gives designers the opportunity to develop a project in tandem with a manufacturer, using innovative technologies and/or materials. The initiative aims at encouraging exchanges of knowhow and skills with an eye to experimenting new solutions for furnishing and interior decorating.

VIA - facts, figures and talents

Talent scout, trend detector
A unique platform in the world, the VIA (“Valorization of Innovation in Furnishing”) promotes design creation in the sector of the home, professional and urban living environments. It encourages exchanges between designers, art directors, industry and distribution and assists professionals in their development. For the past twenty-nine years, its annual programme to support creation finances prototypes designed by tomorrow’s creators. As an observer of the worldwide scene, this laboratory identifies factors of change in the living environment over the medium and long term and explains these factors through conferences and prospective studies. Each year, it presents close to ten exhibits in its gallery in Paris, as well as at international fairs.
The VIA was founded in 1979 on the initiative of the CODIFA (Committee for the Development of the French Furniture Industries) with the support of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

VIA annual Creation Assistance programme
VIA uses a large share of its budget to finance and accompany its creation assistance programme. For the 2009 programme, VIA has committed 250,000 Euros for the follow-up and prototyping of selected projects. Added to this, are the human and financial resources made available for presentations at both the Paris and Milan furniture fairs, press relations on the national and international circuits all year long, and a network of relations with French and foreign distributors and manufacturers. Thanks to the financial support of the CODIFA, over the past twenty-nine years VIA has financed 427 projects and awarded 64 Carte Blanche grants. Since its foundation VIA has earned uncontested international renown for revealing young design talents and for helping many designers now active on the international scene to create for the furnishing industries. The support action of VIA aims at encouraging creative people whatever their background and culture. It contributes to making France, and Paris in particular, a showcase for the expression of international creation in habitat and living space.
