Cuisines en ébullition

From 16 May to 28 June 2009, DOMUS in partnership with VIA presented ’CHAIRS EXHIBITION’*. In doing so, DOMUS made a real cultural statement: shopping for home decoration is about discovery and design.

A theme exhibition at the Foire de Paris, based on a research programme launched by VIA, UNIFA and FCBA.
Young designers imagine the kitchens of tomorrow.

The Paris Fair - running 30 April to 10 May 2009 - will be the venue for ‘Cuisines en ébullition’, a show presenting an off-beat prospective round-up of innovative kitchens. All told, 19 projects will be on show, designed by students from prestige French design schools working in partnership with manufacturers of kitchen furniture and electrical appliances.

"Cuisines en ébullition"
Initiated and piloted by VIA, UNIFA and the FCBA* technological institute, the show is a ‘best of’ overview of advanced trends in domestic kitchens, with proposals that are generous, pertinent, clever and ingenious.
Laid out on a platform of 600 m², it will enable visitors to test real-size projects that address themes such as ‘Environment & Sustainable development’, ‘Materials & Techniques’, ‘Supply & Storage’, ‘Kitchen & Habitat’, ‘Eating habits’, and so on.
For example, the ‘Landscape kitchen’ project in the ‘Eating habits’ section will show how a central bloc shapes a basic geometry that can reconfigure in phase with activities - preparing, cooking, washing up, putting away, etc. In the same section ‘Polefood’ groups hot and cold functions (micro-wave/fridge) in a compact, mobile cube that doubles as a seat.
The ‘Materials & Techniques’ theme is illustrated in particular by the ‘Workbench Kitchen’ that uses a functioning principle based on the workshop, where every element – from tap to hotplate – can change place, adjust or be hidden…
The ‘Supply & Storage’ theme takes form in projects that save time and effort. One of these, ‘Presto’, uses shopping bag/storage trays that pass straight from the supermarket trolley into cupboard or refrigerator, thus saving on loading and unloading.
As for ‘Environment & Sustainable development’, it is represented by projects like ‘Re-Source’, a recycler that feeds kitchen water to toilet cisterns, plants, etc.

All of the proposals are playful, practical, ecological, innovative and feasible
Another theme, ‘Associated activities’, is exemplified by the ‘W’ dish rack, that lifts out of the dish-washing machine and fits straight into the cupboard, or ‘Social Hub’, which shows how moveable fit-outs can adapt kitchen space to different activities: cooking, reading, working, surfing the ‘net, entertaining, etc.
As for ‘Independence at home’, it targets seniors and people with impaired mobility. Here, the ‘Sense line’ project uses a ramp that fits to work surfaces as an interface to facilitate functions: control of water flow, preparing and cooking food, lighting… Another proposal, ‘Kitchen(o)metre’ introduces a central bloc laid out ergonomically to enable economy of movements and ease of usage.

Hyper-functional, ergonomic, environment-friendly, the kitchen of tomorrow is a powerful stimulus to the creativity of both young designers and manufacturers.
