Domus : Chairs Exhibition

From 16 May to 28 June 2009, DOMUS in partnership with VIA presented ’CHAIRS EXHIBITION’*. In doing so, DOMUS made a real cultural statement: shopping for home decoration is about discovery and design.

To each his/her chair
Designed and mounted by VIA, ’CHAIRS EXHIBITION’ had its maiden run in 2005 in Lausanne. Since then a new presentation has updated the entire format for the general public, so for the first time in France 150 chairs made by contemporary creators from all over the world were on show. The scenography was impressive to say the least – a 12-metre high tornado-ziggurat of multicoloured chairs. This imposing structure was visible from every corner of the DOMUS Centre.

From the viewpoint of history, chairs no doubt figure among the most important pieces of furniture ever made. They respond to the three basis postures of human beings: standing, sitting and lying down, the seated position having pride of place in our daily lives. Chairs have long been symbols of social rank, power and status, but in our day and age have become more democratic thanks to changes in production technologies. Today, we use chairs that are’adapted to all sorts of uses: from the straight back dining table chair to the bar stoool, and including the rocking chair, the office chair and the café seat. Chairs also adapt to different body shapes and come in a wide variety of forms, colours and materials. Their evolution is by no means over: they are constantly being reinvented to suit new postures, new life styles and new work conditions.

’CHAIRS EXHIBITION’ makes design more accessible by giving everyone a unique chance to discover the fabulous history of chairs in the work of designers, producers and makers, whether be artisans or big firms.
