b.a-ba, petites résurrections

This exhibition-sale, entitled ‘b.a-ba, little resurrections’, invites the public to discover a new line of products made by Le Relais, a branch of Emmaüs-France, and perhaps purchase one or more of the 500 b.a-ba first edition pieces at bargain prices. Every year our society discards millions of things that are outdated or unwanted: plastic garden chairs, chandeliers in mahogany and brass, sad old mirrors, clothing and crockery. Designer Cyrille Candas has been working on the b.a-ba project for the past three years, finding ways to restore used things and breathe new life into them.

b.a-ba is an original initiative for recycling textiles and objects collected by Le Relais and Emmaüs. When she got involved in this adventure, Cyrille wanted to start up a new chain of production that would redefine the limits of recycling.
Her first observation was that from year to year the quality of discarded textiles was getting lower, to the point that many garments could not be re-sold. The second was that outdated objects and furniture in plastic or wood were much less in demand even on the alternative market.
Cyrille suggested that Le Relais innovate by transforming textiles into a raw material by flaking. Old clothes are shredded and their short fibres in the form of flakes are dyed before being sprayed onto pieces of furniture, objects… and even clothing. The result is surprising: a peach-skin texture that is pleasing to the eye and nice to touch. Le Relais supplies the textiles for flaking, while Emmaüs provides objects of all kinds to be transformed – the aim being to make things really attractive so that people will want to buy them.
b.a-ba is a double-barrelled project. Besides the issue of recycling there is the development of a new industrial activity that promises to keep going the 1 800 jobs created by Le Relais – and to generate even more –, getting disadvantaged workers back into the economy. Putting its trust in the project, Le Relais has set up its own flaking workshop to provide the raw material to keep production and distribution going for the b.a-ba collection, which will be sold in Ding Fring boutiques.
