environmental designer, industrial designer

Cédric Sportes is a young French designer, born in Paris in 1973. He trained at Kingston University in London, where he collaborated with designers Tom Dixon and Ron Arad. On his return to France he spent a year working for Philippe Starck before going to Montréal, where he set up in 1999.
Sportes has already developed his own style. The pared-down aesthetics of his creations, which are simple but rich in fantasy, generate their own communicative warmth.
His philosophy is ’Even if an object remains an object, it has to integrate our life style and become a friend. I want things to be durable and to outlive fashions, I want people to form relationships with things and want to keep them for a long time’.
His creations are solid, with clean lines and playful notes. The distinguishing feature of his signature is the use on all his pieces of furniture of small L-shaped feet, which create the illusion that these stationary objects are moving.
Maybe it’s a reference to the L-robots in ’Star Wars’ or to the bound feet of Chinese women in days gone by. Cédric leaves it up to the public to interpret his objects, which often look like pet animals that are part of the home...
