environmental designer

I’ve always admired illusionists: the way they alter our perception of reality with a flick of the hand, make everyday objects magic and enable us to ’see’ what doesn’t exist. I like illusion and I try to introduce it to my work and my treatment of materials. I try to give strange and marvellous qualities to well-known everyday materials, so as to make them (if only for the space of an instant) unrecognisable. If the material does not lose its fundamental properties (its ’soul’) during the transformation process, then the project is satisfying. I don’t think I have any prejudices towards any type of material: I use whatever comes to hand. Design can be good or bad, but a material can only be well or badly used. A material can find its function depending on the capacities of the designer to use its qualities. Even so, cheap materials are risky - only a talented designer can turn them into exceptional objects.
