painter, ceramics creator

Valérie Raymond-Stempowska uses indecipherable texts or fragments of poems by Rimbaud and Henri Michaud to upset our sense of the written word. She finds her inspiration in cursive writing, the kind you see in school exercise books or old diaries, a sort of distant music that puts both the eye and the mind at ease. She opens up a way in painting where the graphic gesture suggests hidden emotions. Her artist’s questioning of the signs which are at the origin of all written language is an approach that she practises in both ceramics and on canvas, almost as if she was intent on bringing closer together the supports used by the painter, the potter and the writer. With her dishes and vases etched with calligraphies that evoke a mysterious message, and her canvases filled with letters of the alphabet scored into a dark and secret page, the artist proposes an extreme vision of reading, like a hermeneutics of the imagination.(JMM)
