environmental designer, architect, interior architect, teacher

Born in France in 1971, Emmanuelle Moureaux qualified as an architect DPLG in 1996 after studying at the school of architecture in Bordeaux and working two years in the Eric Raffy office. Fascinated by Japan, she moved to Tokyo in 1996 and in 2003 set up ‘Emmanuelle Moureaux architecture + design’ there.
Inspired by traditional Japanese techniques for building walls and by the colours and multiple overlays of volumes to be found in the city of Tokyo, in her work she develops a specific concept known as shikiri, which means literally ‘divide (create) space using colour’.
It was on the basis of this concept that she began designing a series of projects in 2004, in spheres ranging from architecture to interior design, and from furniture to product design. Colour is used not as an element applied for finish once the design process has come to completion, but as a three-dimensional component capable of structuring space.
In 2005 she won the Tokyo Design Tide Best Installation Award; in 2007 and 2008 the Best Store of The Year prize. The Honk Kong based magazine Perspective included her in their special ‘40 under 40’ feature in 2007, and in 2009 she won the CS Design Prize.
She is a member of the Society of Architects of Tokyo and since 2008 is associate professor at the Tohoku University of Art & Design.
