PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Chris Jackson flung open the South London doors of Northwards in September 2003. Since it’s inception, Northwards has worked on a cross section of projects for clients across Europe, and has gained international press attention for producing work that is beautiful, intelligent and well detailed. In Chris’s own words:

‘I pride myself on not working in a particular ‘hand’. My work is style-less, and the end result of a project is always derived from need. It is never frivolous, but made up of essential details, whether they be informed by client, process or user.’

Chris’s pragmatism was influenced by a period working in Habitat’s East London design studio, under Tom Dixon. Indeed, the Autumn/Winter 05 catalogue features a number of products designed by Jackson, both from his time in the Studio, and from self-initiated projects which have since been picked up by the retailer.

To his peers, Chris is also regarded as a facilitator. His energy and drive has been key in the development of the young British Design Collective ‘SHIFT’, which he co-founded in 2003 with Sam Johnson and Ed Carpenter. Made up of a number of talented young British-based designers, Shift’s first project ‘Time:Frame’’ culminated in a critically acclaimed exhibition of furniture produced with local furniture manufacturers. Most recently SHIFT were commissioned to design the interior for one of the ‘pods’ for Norman Foster’s West London Academy, and have also worked with Scarlet Projects and Haworth.

Another facet to Jackson’s design vocabulary is his ability as a tutor of design. A key Sessional Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Furniture and Product course at Ravensbourne College, he has led a wide variety of projects with students, and cites this as a catalyst for his own personal development as a designer.
