Markku Salo´s work can be divided into two different areas. First, there is utility products, manufactured in serial production. The second, unique, single pieces of art and installations.
"I enjoy working this way", Salo explains, "although there are some negative aspects to it as well. Utility products is more or less teamwork and you are almost always forced to compromise. There are purely commercial products and you also have to accept that they are marketed in your own name even though they do not necessarily look exact the way you want them to. On the other hand, it feels good not to be that selfish, to try to understand consumers´ needs. At the other end of the line you have artwork, purely selfish and uninhibited".
