Hans Sandgren Jakobsen was born in 1963 in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1986 he finished training as a cabinet maker. His test piece of work - a desk - was awarded a silver medal. From 1986 to 1990 he studied industrial design at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen, and during that period he went on a study tour to America to study the Shakers´ craftsmanship. After graduating as industrial designer he went to Japan for three months where he worked as designer at COBO Design in Nagoya.

In 1991 he started working for the Danish designer Nanna Ditzel and at the same time began making a name for himself. At the end of 1997 Hans Sandgren Jakobsen ceased working for Nanna Ditzel in order to concentrate totally on his own designs. He has made designs for firms such as: VIA - USA, Kohseki - Japan, QM furniture – China, and in Denmark for Askmans Trævarefabrik, Bent Krogh, Bondo Kontormøbler, EH Møbler, Fritz Hansen, Frederica Furniture, SIS Learning, Werner.
Elsewhere, he has been a member of the design group “Spring” since 1991 and of the society “SE” Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling since 1994. He has been awarded many prizes and scholarships, for instance, from the Gurli and Paul Madsen Foundation and from the Danish government fund for the endowment of the arts. For several years running, he held the Danish National Bank Jubilee scholarship. The prizes he has won include the Fornäs Prize, Good Design Award, Red Dot and the Danish Furniture Award. His works have been shown in exhibitions all over the world.
