It was during the workshop directed by Denis Santachiara at the Vitra Summer Workshop in Weil Am Rhein that the Studio Olgoj Chorchoj was founded. Michal Fronek and Jan Nemecek, who knew each other from their studies at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in the studio of Borek Sipek, came to the decision based on their abilities they recognized during the workshop.

Their backgrounds in craftsmanship, and their having had to be self-sufficient during their studies, enabled them to react quickly in new surroundings, to organize and improvise with whatever was at hand. While other participants (from more privileged backgrounds) were having difficulty to start, Fronek and Nemecek were already producing design objects.

They chose a (mythical) figure from Mongolian folklore as the name of their studio, based purely on the sound of the word “Olgoj Chorchoj”, and not on the characteristics attributed to the creature. Nonetheless the striking ability of the Olgoj Chorchoj to take quick action could be considered similar to the ability Fronek and Nemecek discovered they possessed during the workshop.

Craftsmanship remains an important aspect in the designs of the studio. Collaborating with traditional firms such as Kavalier Glassworks to produce new designs with established techniques, they challenge and revitalize the processes based on good craftsmanship.

Their respect for other Czech designers of the past has led them to write a vanguarding manifesto for the preservation of good Czech Design from the 20th century, and on a more personal level, to restore a Czech Tatra automobile from the early 60s to original condition.
