das ding is a design studio, currently based in Brussels, Belgium. The studio was founded in 2001 by Davy Grosemans.
Grosemans is fascinated by objects that have been around for a long time and don’t look “designed” at all, but come across as fairly banal. By transforming these archetypes, with the utmost respect for the original, contemporary products arise in which the original qualities are fully emphasised.
In addition to functionality, ergonomics and the choice of materials, semiotics are therefore also very important to him. With each new product he designs, he wants to tell a story. If you observe them well, you can understand and “read” them.
The studio mainly works on self-initiated projects, most of which concern furniture and lighting. The main objective for das ding is to develop objects and experiments into fully functional and commercial industrial products, preferably in cooperation with manufacturers.
