The peaceful assault of the warrior before night.

Olivier Védrine is French, a Parisian even, in the same way as a Japanese person imagines France and Paris in the many representations of fashion, history and science : cheekiness, art de vivre, inventiveness and resourcefulness. He is also Japanese, a Tokyo boy, just as the French imagine modern Japan : efficiency, stubborness, power and power to do, Oriental wisdom. It is no doubt the blend of these two imaginations, calculated to surprise and charm in the same way as 19th century Japanese exoticism did, but with realism thrown in too, that gives to his utopian designs their characteristic atmosphere of science fiction mixed with earthy poetry, Martian nudists landed on green service strips, diurnal rest in the midst of galactic night. And yet beyond this sensation, Védrine’s work is as precise as the needle of an acupuncturist : everything in it concerns the treatment of surfaces, the protection of the skin, the bringing forth of soul truth in topology. Meaning the truths of serenity, that precede or
terminate the certainties and agitation of the warrior who is sure his cause is just.
